V: COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Part 7: Student Participation in Arts Midwest World Fest

Overview:
As students become experts on Arts Midwest World Fest cultures and music, they should become involved in artist residencies and concerts. They can act as ushers at concerts, write press releases and programs, design advertisements, and so on. High school students can visit elementary and middle schools to lead musical activities or mentor younger students involved in projects. Students of any age might appear on local television or radio programs to talk about what they've learned, or might write articles for the local paper. Mural painting, concert decoration, musical performance—there are innumerable ways students could participate in and promote the residencies of these artists. Ask students how they would like to be involved—they will probably think of things adults do not.

Do not hesitate to call local arts and community organizations, museums, radio and television stations, newspapers, senior centers, or colleges. Local businesses might be willing to participate or donate materials. Getting the community involved with the schools, and the students involved with the community, will have benefits that last long after the residencies have ended.
